2010 Native Plant Sale

Shrubs and Trees

 

Native Shrubs

All shrubs and trees offered for sale come as 5-gallon potted plants with an excellent root system.  Top growth in containers is small enough to allow for easy transport.  Newly planted shrubs and trees will, with proper care, put on excellent growth due to extensive root system.

Planting and care instructions will be included with each order.  Quantities are limited, so please order early to assure availability.

     

749 - Red Chokeberry

Description This attractive shrub, which prefers moist soils, is best used in mass plantings.  Flowers bloom in May.  Red berries.
     

750 - Black Chokeberry

Latin Name Aronia melanocarpa

Fall Foliage Red / Orange
Sun Full Sun / Partial Sun
Description White flowers appear in early May with black fruit appearing in late summer. Fall color is exceptional. Birds will eat berries in late fall and winter. Prefers wet soils, but does well in good garden soil.
     

755 - Red Osier Dogwood

Description Birds devour the shiny blue berries on this shrub.  In full sun, it can become as broad as it is tall.  White flowers appear in June.
     

756 - Pagoda Dogwood

Description A very elegant dogwood, with beautiful lateral branching and white spring flowers.  Birds relish fruit in late summer.  Great fall color.
     

758 - Dwarf Bush Honeysuckle

Latin Name Diervilla lonicera

Fall Foliage Red

Description This low, mounding shrub makes nice mass plantings due to short height and quick growth rate. Fall color is a real highlight. Does well in drier shade or well-drained areas in partial shade but tolerates the sun as well.
     

761 - American Filbert

Description Also called Hazelnut, this excellent shrub produces edible nuts, though squirrels get most of them.  Male flower catkins appear in early spring.  Fall color is a highlight.  Will spread when pruned or mowed back.
     

765 - Smooth Hydrangea

Fall Foliage Brown
Sun Shade
Description Prefers full to part shade and will require watering during hot weather. White flower clusters appear in June or July and make great dried arrangements. Can be mowed or cut back in fall.

Description From eastern U.S., but does well in our area. Flowers bloom in May and dark blue berries are devoured by birds in late summer and fall. Works best when several plants are planted in groupings around trees.
     

787 - Witherod Viburnuum

Description Name refers to its use as basket and canning material.  Flowers in late June and produces beautiful clusters of berries that change from green to pink to red to blue.  Requires moist well drained soils and prefers morning sun.

Description

Also called Juneberry, this handsome small tree is an early bloomer with smooth grey bark.  Edible fruit ripens in June and fall color is a highlight.  Prefers well drained soils and at least 4 hours of sunlight per day.

Description

Plant from Spring Valley's Redeker Peony farm available in gallon pots.  Several varieties include Red, Pink, White, Doubles and Singles.  Specific requests can not be guaranteed.  We will do our best to fill your orders.
