Prairie Plants |

Growing native plants in the garden
preserves species that may soon disappear from wild
areas as lands are cleared for development. It also
preserves habitat for insects that pollinate their
flowers, as well as other wildlife species whose life
cycles are intertwined with each plant type.
Each year the Schaumburg
Community Garden Club and the Schaumburg Park District coordinate a
native plant sale in conjunction with the annual Backyards for Nature
Fair. Proceeds from the Native Plant sale benefit these groups, and in
turn are used to benefit the local community through beautification,
education and donations. You can rely on the Schaumburg Community Garden
Club to provide a vast selection of high quality plants at reasonable
prices.
Even more important than raising funds, the sale
promotes the use of hardy native prairie plants, woodland wildflowers and shrubs
to create low maintenance gardens. Native plants are genetically adapted to the
growing conditions of their specific regions. They are at home in the local
soil, they can survive on the local rainfall, and they have worked out a
harmonious and cooperative relationship with local wildlife. At the same time,
these gardens preserve the plants and heritage of our region. Being natives,
they are easy to grow and require little care. |
