The following
Designer Gardens have been formulated to suggest how
a Midwest Gardener can create an attractive display
using plants of harmonious flower form and color.
Every 24-plant Garden
features a wide array of bloom times, interesting
foliage textures, and will cover approximately 36 square
feet at maturity. All suggestions are open to
individual interpretation.
Do You Have a Problem Wet Area in Your Yard?
Most of us have a soggy area caused from gutter or
sump-pump runoff. Planting a rain garden can help you
turn this “problem” area into a beautiful feature that
will attract a variety of birds and butterflies.
Better yet, these plants reduce the
volume of water in the area and actively improve the
quality of water entering local storm drains and nearby
streams.
What is a
Rain Garden?
A rain garden is a man-made depression in
the ground that ranges from 4 to 8 inches deep. It
is designed to collect water, that might normally erode
your property into sewers and streams, and slowly filter
it back into the soil.
The depression is planted with native
plants that tolerate wet soil. The deep roots of many
native plants increase the ability of soil to hold water
and hold the soil together. Rain gardens don’t require
much space and can be designed in various shapes.
Native prairie plants will grow in average garden soil.
The following gardens will also tolerate the soil
conditions noted on the informational pages. |
