Welcome
to the Native Plant Sale
Spring is right around the corner. Now is the time to think about
how you would like to change your garden. We invite you to turn
your typical suburban yard into a native haven for birds, butterflies
and other beneficial wildlife. Even a soggy area of lawn can
become an ecologically sound rain garden that is better adapted to
handle rain water runoff. Problem shady areas can become beautiful
woodland settings.
Native plants are the answer. They offer not only beauty,
hardiness and versatility; they also allow us to make a positive impact
on soil, water and air quality. |

Spring Valley Backyards for Nature Fair
On Sunday, May 2nd, the Spring Valley Nature Center will hold its annual
Backyards for Nature Fair. This Earth Day and Arbor Day celebration has
activities for the entire family! Children can build their own birdhouse,
participate in planting, see a puppet show and get free wildflower seeds.
Activities for adults may include information
on natural pesticides, techniques for planting and landscaping, tips on
composting and soil improvement.
Pre-packaged Barnyard Manure Compost
will be available for purchase.
Rain Barrels
Spring Valley is offering rain barrels again this
year!

Every 55 gallon barrel is made from reconditioned
blue plastic. They come fully assembled and are ready to use; with screen covers
to prevent mosquitoes and debris from collecting inside. They are an ideal way
to capture and store rainwater from your downspouts, for use in watering plants
and gardens. Each barrel costs $50.
In order to receive your barrel at the Backyards
for Nature Fair on May 2nd, your order must be received by
April 1.

How
Do I Know What to Select?
We have provided information about each plant, including flower color, bloom
season, height, moisture, and light requirements. We also indicate which
plants will attract birds, butterflies or hummingbirds.
About the Plants
Most of the prairie plants are provided as “plugs” with a fully developed root
system in a 5” deep soil mass. Most woodland and non-native perennials
come in 4 ½” pots. The culinary herbs are well-developed plants in 3”
pots. Additional plant varieties not listed in the brochure may be
available during the sale.
